Us-Colombia Free Trade Agreement To Be Implemented In May

The VI Summit of the Americas “Connecting the Americas: Partners for Prosperity”, came to a close that same day. 33 leaders from the Americas were in attendance together with over 5,000 participants. The opening ceremony of this year’s summit meeting for the western hemisphere included the Colombian national anthem sung by Shakira, followed by speeches from the president of the Organization of American States, OAS, Jose Miguel Insulza, and the director of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean, ECLAC., Alicia Bárcena.
During his opening declaration below, the Colombian president Juan Manuel Santos, pointed out that not only are there no irreconcilable differences among the countries of the region, but in fact the Americas has managed to join together to attain democratic and economic growth.
The official agenda of the IV Summit of the Americas included five key issues: fighting poverty and inequality; physical regional integration; reduction of and risk management for disasters; access to and use of technology; transnational organized crime and public safety. A special-note statement was made to announce that the Free Trade Agreement between the United States and Colombia will officially go into effect this coming May 15, 2012.
